We pulled up to the ferry dock in St. John and a local taxi driver shouted…
“Go back to where you came from. The ferries aren’t running.”
That was a major plot twist.
We had flights home from the Virgin Islands in 4 hours, and the Caribbean Sea was standing between us and the St. Thomas airport.
I thought I had thought of EVERYTHING in the face of Tropical Storm Grace.
✔️ Extra time to drop off the car rental.
✔️ Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the flight.
✔️ Multiple checks to make sure our flights weren’t canceled.
✔️ A back-up flight on United Airlines in case Spirit Airlines canceled at the last minute.
(Okay, the last one was a bit extreme, but this girl has a lot of Virgo energy in her!)
My husband looked at me.
“What do you want to do?”
I was frozen in that moment.
I had controlled everything I could think of.
But, when the ferries would start running again was 100% out of my control.
No amount of back-up peanut butter and jelly sandwiches could change the fact that we were stuck on one island without any place to sleep. And our flight was scheduled to take off ON TIME on a different island.
I felt like a roped calf struggling to stand up.
The unfortunate thing was….
The more I struggled for a solution, the more overwhelmed I became. The more overwhelmed I became, the harder it was to see a solution.
UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO SURRENDER.
I wasn’t going to convince the Coast Guard to reopen the ports. AND I wasn’t going to convince the airlines to wait for us.
BUT, I could text the villa management company and see if we could go back to our villa for an extra night. AND, I could call the airlines to rebook our flights for the next day.
There were things that I could control when I took a deep breath and stopped flailing.
IT’S THE SAME THING WITH OUR HOMES.
When we don’t live alone, we can’t control everything.
It’s the #1 thing that drives my clients crazy.
They say over and over again that the energy in their homes would be sparkly clear if it wasn’t for…
➡️ Their partner.
➡️ Their kids.
➡️ Their extended family.
But here’s the thing.
We can’t control other people.
Or what they choose to hold onto.
Or how they choose to take care of their belongings.
(And yes that includes the hideous poster from the college dorm room that has survived 35 years.)
We can only control ourselves.
SO, WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HOME?
It’s remembering the adage that when you point your finger at one person, you’re pointing three fingers back at yourself.
It’s remembering my #1 rule when you hear a complaint about someone else’s belongings coming out of your mouth….
DO YOUR WORK FIRST.
AND DO IT RELENTLESSLY AND UNAPOLGETICALLY.
Take a careful look at all those things that you can control and make sure that you are only holding onto those things that you love, need or use.
You’re not holding onto things out of guilt or obligation or a sense of lack.
WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS YOU CAN CONTROL?
Here’s a list of suggested things and places within your home where you can do your work and ensure you are only holding onto things that raise your energetic vibration.
- Your clothes
- Your shoes
- Your jackets
- Your toiletries
- Your suitcases/back packs/purses
- Your water bottles
- Your coffee mugs
- Your nightstand
- Your books
- Your memorabilia
- Your photographs
- Your journals
- Your spiritual tools
- Your collections
- Your artwork
- Your mail
- Your electronics
- Your home office
- Your car
HERE’S THE MAGIC.
When you let go of the things that no longer serve you, you’ll discover that those around you magically begin to do their work.
➡️ Your partner casually mentions that he’s giving away his golf clubs that he hasn’t used in decades.
➡️ Your kids clothes land in the laundry basket.
➡️ Your sister announces she’s moving to a new apartment.
It truly is magical. And SO much easier than trying to control the uncontrollable.
Here’s to doing your work,
xoxo
